Crise identitaire, dédoublement et folie : articulation littéraire et cinématographique de trois romans du XXe siècle. "La Belle image" de Marcel Aymé, "Le Locataire chimérique" de Roland Topor et "La Moustache" d’Emmanuel Carrère

The fantastic phenomenon is an attack on the rational and the logical. The intrusion of uncertainty destabilizes the character's universe. It arouses anguish in him; a form of visceral fear in the face of an unknown and unexplained event. The victim of these events is torn between a rational explanation of the facts and a supernatural explanation. Ghosts, spirits, vampires, haunted houses and supernatural creatures have always fueled the fantastic tales of the 19th century. But the fantastic also explores the phenomena of consciousness and the theme of identity. Psychosis, obsessions, madness, monomania, paranoia, the figure of an evil double or the disruption of human behavior are at the heart of fantastic literature.The duplication of identity creates doubt and confusion between the real and the imaginary, between the concrete and the fantasy, between the dream and the undeniable. Our corpus will be composed of three French literary works of the 20th century: La Belle Image by Marcel Aymé, which appeared in 1941, Le Locataire chimérique by Roland Topor, published in 1976, and La Mustache by Emmanuel Carrère, published in 1986 - and their respective adaptations in 1951. by Claude Heymann, in 1976 by Roman Polanski and in 2005 by Carrère himself.The Chimerical Tenant relates the adventure of Trelkovsky, a new tenant in a Parisian building that seems calm and peaceful, who will be the victim of persecution by his neighbors. The harassment gradually makes him lose his mind. Trelkovsky identifies, in a morbid way, with Simone Choule, the former tenant of the apartment he occupies, who has broken out of the window. He will end up transforming completely into her (disguise, wig, makeup…) and reproducing his suicide.La Mustache de Carrère opens with a rather banal and routine shaving scene. The situation will experience a disturbing and gradual shift when the protagonist decides to shave his mustache. Doubt and paranoia set in when no one seems to notice this difference, even worse when his wife and group of friends tell him he's never worn a mustache. All its certainties and all its benchmarks are falling apart. The protagonist will end up doubting his own existence.In La Belle image, identity disorder is expressed through the metamorphosis of modest Raoul Cérusier into Roland Colbert; an improved image of himself. However, he preserves his inner identity and tries in vain to reconcile his new image with his original identity.These works have in common the deviant psychological experience of the protagonists. They explore the phenomena of consciousness, the theme of identity, the disruption of human behavior and the modification of the relationship to reality. The protagonists fall victim to an insidious and spurious form of ego distortion. This theme arouses anxiety because it implies a dispossession of identity and loss of self. Our research will focus on examining the different forms of personal identity fragmentation in literature and film. Through this multidisciplinary study, we will see how this theme unfolds and how it is treated in both disciplines.We will try to find echoes between literature and cinema and show how this interaction has enriched the two arts. The fantastic tale is teeming with introspective dialogue, monologues and complex thoughts that are difficult to transcribe onto screen without losing their share of mystery. What are the processes that cinema uses to preserve the mystery of the fantastic by translating the written story into a pictorial story? Literary fiction, philosophy and psychoanalysis reflect on the same questions relating to the human condition and in particular on death, the relationship to reality, identity. How are these three fields of knowledge correlated ?Le phénomène fantastique est une agression du rationnel et de la logique. L’intrusion de l’incertitude vient déstabiliser l’univers du personnage. Il suscite chez lui de l’angoisse ; une forme de peur viscérale face à un événement inconnu et inexpliqué. La victime de ces événements est tiraillée entre une explication rationnelle des faits et une explication surnaturelle. Revenants, esprits, vampires, maisons hantées et créatures surnaturelles ont toujours alimenté les récits fantastiques du XIXe siècle. Mais le fantastique explore aussi les phénomènes de conscience et le thème de l’identité. Psychose, obsessions, folie, monomanie, paranoïa, la figure d’un double maléfique ou encore le dérèglement du comportement humain sont au cœur de la littérature fantastique.Le dédoublement identitaire suscite le doute et la confusion entre le réel et l’imaginaire, entre le concret et le fantasme, entre le songe et l’indéniable. Notre corpus sera composé de trois œuvres littéraires françaises du XXe siècle : La Belle Image de Marcel Aymé apparue en 1941, Le Locataire chimérique de Roland Topor publié en 1976 et La Moustache d’Emmanuel Carrère paru en 1986 – et de leurs adaptations respectives en 1951 par Claude Heymann, en 1976 par Roman Polanski et en 2005 par Carrère lui-même.Le Locataire chimérique relate l’aventure de Trelkovsky, nouveau locataire dans un immeuble parisien qui semble calme et tranquille, qui sera la victime de persécutions de la part de ses voisins. Les harcèlements lui font peu à peu perdre la raison. Trelkovsky s’identifie, d’une manière morbide, à Simone Choule, l’ancienne locataire de l’appartement qu’il occupe, qui s’est défenestrée. Il finira par se transformer totalement en elle (déguisement, perruque, maquillage…) et à reproduire son suicide.La Moustache de Carrère s’ouvre sur une scène de rasage assez banale et routinière. La situation connaîtra un glissement troublant et progressif quand le protagoniste décide de se raser la moustache. Le doute et la paranoïa s’installent lorsque personne ne semble remarquer cette différence, encore pire lorsque sa femme et son groupe d’amis lui affirment qu’il n’a jamais porté une moustache. Toutes ses certitudes et tous ses repères se désagrègent. Le protagoniste finira par douter de sa propre existence.Dans La Belle image, le trouble identitaire s’exprime par la métamorphose du modeste Raoul Cérusier en Roland Colbert ; une image améliorée de lui-même. Il préserve cependant son identité intérieure et cherche vainement à concilier sa nouvelle image avec son identité première.Ces œuvres ont en commun l’expérience psychologique déviante des protagonistes. Elles explorent les phénomènes de conscience, le thème de l’identité, le dérèglement du comportement humain et la modification du rapport au réel. Les protagonistes sont victimes d’une forme insidieuse et fallacieuse de la déformation du moi. Ce thème suscite l’angoisse parce qu’il sous-entend une dépossession identitaire et une perte de soi. Notre recherche se penchera sur l’examen des différentes formes de la fragmentation de l’identité personnelle dans la littérature et au cinéma. À travers cette étude pluridisciplinaire, nous verrons comment ce thème se déploie et comment il est traité dans les deux disciplines.Nous essaierons de chercher des échos entre la littérature et le cinéma et de montrer comment cette interaction a permis d’enrichir les deux arts. Le récit fantastique foisonne de dialogues introspectifs, de monologues et de pensées complexes difficiles à transcrire sur l’écran sans qu’ils perdent leur part de mystère. Quels sont les procédés qu’utilise le cinéma pour préserver le mystère propre au fantastique en traduisant le récit écrit en récit imagé ? Fiction littéraire, philosophie et psychanalyse réfléchissent aux mêmes questions relatives à la condition humaine et notamment sur la mort, le rapport au réel, l’identité.
